We recently sat down with an automotive consultant in Europe, reflecting on the discrepancy between the wishes of politicians and bureaucrats and those of automotive customers. While the former two groups want customers to go for downsizing, electrification, and altogether responsible choices, the premium customer has three very different wishes. He or she wants a an SUV, b all-wheel drive, c ultra-high performance, and d all of the above.
We wondered: Will humankind ever grow up? Perhaps, but in the meantime, BMW's M performance division has listened to its customers attentively, and here are the most recent results: the X3 M and its coupelike derivative, the X4 M.
At horsepower, they are positioned well above the current range toppers, the hp X3 and X4 M40i. And because too much is not enough, BMW is giving us Competition versions as well. Their engines are rated at horsepower, and they are available right from the beginning.
But it's bored out and comes with a shorter stroke losing a precious 5 cc of displacement in the processand the M division has touched simply everything to turn it into a loud and high-revving powerhouse. Both engines produce maximum power at rpm, and the maximum torque of lb-ft is served up from to rpm for the Competition version.
Force fed by a pair of turbochargers, the S58 is fitted with a forged crankshaft and a DOHC valve head featuring variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing and variable intake-valve lift. It sends its torque through a ZF-supplied eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts so quickly, you won't miss a dual-clutch box but perhaps a manual. According to BMW, zero to 60 mph happens in 4. But it's not just up to the engine to equalize the nearly two tons of weight.
The other half of the job falls to the chassis and suspension, which have been significantly upgraded from the M40i models. An array of changes to the kinematics partner with special dampers and a special power-steering unit, which makes the true M models stiffer and helps them handle with more precision.
The heavily rear-biased all-wheel-drive powertrain leans on the M5's system. Add to that the electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, and you have a two-ton SUV that handles like a sports car and loves to hang out its tail. Larger inch wheels are optional. And we would consider going for them, just as we might go for the pretty carbon-fiber appearance package.
Because, why not. It'll help set the X3 M and X4 M even further apart from their more standard siblings. Maybe we are just a stand-in for the typical premium customer, right? Of course, we'd look at the competition, too. But these new BMW M models may be the most perfect combination of virtues. Made in the United States, they will be at dealerships starting in mid-July.

Watching the BMW X3 M corner is a little like watching BMW's engineers impose their will on physics—it's not always elegant, but it'll get your attention.
And from behind the wheel, despite its immodest height and upright driving position, this hp utility vehicle horsepower in Competition trim is, well, undeniably capable. Using the same eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential as the M5 supersedanthe all-wheel-drive X3 M and its sloped-roof counterpart, the mechanically identical X4 Mare capable of shuttling torque fore and aft to assist the SUV in going where it's pointed.
We initially drove them in rural New Jersey and New York, including laps at the 3. Even with a front tire occasionally dangling off the ground, torque continued to flow to the connected rubber, resulting in explosive corner exits and just plain silly speeds on the straights. Still, the idea that any BMW owner will ever do anything like this in a baby hauler that's all ate up with motor, brakes, and wildly adjustable suspension is absurd.
Relative to the X3 M40i, BMW added multiple chassis braces, stiffer springs, retuned bushings, and more authority to the M's adaptive dampers.
The result is stunning control accompanied by Rubik's Cube levels of adjustability. There are individual settings for the dampers, steering, exhaust, shift calibration and speed, torque split, stability control, and M modes. This is America; having choices is good. But having no presets makes us question the M division's self-confidence. Hey, BMW, there's nothing wrong with a preset Sport mode.
Still, once set up, this X3 offers better response than many sports sedans did only a decade ago. Whether its owners will ever use that capability isn't clear. LOWS: Another hp answer to a question no one is asking, no preset drive modes, excessive and burdensome adjustability. What isn't lost on us is its new powerplant.
Code-named the S58, the twin-turbocharged 3. It's also the strongest BMW inline-six, utilizing a forged crank, connecting rods, and pistons to push its specific output beyond that of any other BMW engine.
Composed of 90 percent new parts, it uses a shorter stroke than the B58 engine found in the X3 M40i and Mi sedan to accommodate the slightly higher revs it's capable of versus rpm and to improve durability during sustained high-rpm operation. A pair of turbochargers the B58 uses a single twin-scroll turbo are required to generate the air flow needed to achieve the S58's higher output. Air-to-liquid intercooling supports the Five nose-mounted heat exchangers—two engine-coolant radiators, two intercooler radiators, and an engine oil cooler—evacuate heat.

The factory navigation system now comes bundled with the optional full digital gauge cluster BMW's Live Cockpitbut the rest of the features carry over from the previous model year. The X3 also boasts an upscale interior and top-notch construction we've come to expect from BMW. But the lack of Android Auto smartphone integration and the added cost of Apple CarPlay compatibility, which requires a subscription to keep it going, might dissuade tech-savvy buyers. Fortunately, that's about it when it comes to examining the X3's list of drawbacks. Options are plentiful, and the interior is big enough to seat adults in all the major seating positions.
The rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i and the all-wheel-drive xDrive30i are powered by a turbocharged 2. The M40i is powered by a 3. All X3s use an eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard 30i features include LED headlights and foglights, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, simulated leather upholstery, BMW's iDrive infotainment interface, Apple CarPlay compatibility subscription-basedand a speaker audio system.
There are multiple option packages available for the sDrive30i and the xDrive30i. The Convenience package brings you keyless access and a panoramic sunroof, while the other two equip the X3 with a variety of additional driver safety aids. Want a sportier X3? The M Sport package adds some stylistic enhancements, while the Dynamic Handling package equips the X3 with adaptive suspension dampers, upgraded brakes and variable-ratio steering.

This is the best bang for your buck on any BMW. Before we left the dealership on the day of purchase, "low coolant warning" light appeared. I was so excited for this car, I loved it when I drove it. It handled well, is cute and sporty, however, this experience has ruined my excitement for this car and am afraid I got a lemon.

Under the hood, BMW used a 3. That's enough power to run from mph in 4. Upgrade to the Competition, and you get hp, a top speed of mph, and a time of 4. You'll have to add the optional M Driver's Package if you want to hit those top speeds, though. Otherwise, BMW limits you to mph. For comparison, our long-term X3 M40i makes hp and lb-ft of torque, and in our testing hit 60 mph in 4.
The last Porsche Macan Turbo with the Performance Package only makes hp and lb-ft of torque but hit 60 mph in 3. Meanwhile, the hp Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio ran from mph in 3. To improve driving dynamics, the all-wheel-drive system only sends power to the front wheels when the rear wheels begin to lose traction. Otherwise, it operates like it's rear-wheel drive. Even better, if you ever decide to hit the track, BMW promises you can turn stability control completely off.
To handle the extra power and improve the driving experience, engineers worked to stiffen the chassis. But if you place your order after August of this year, you'll have the option of trading your regular front strut brace for a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic one. Competition models also come with larger anti-roll bars to better control body roll. And, of course, the entire active suspension has been reworked for sportier handling. Braking is handled by And in the interest of saving weight, the cast-iron discs have aluminum hubs.
A set of inch wheels comes standard, with Competition models getting inchers. Finishing out the M transformation is a more muscular body kit that improves aerodynamics, as well as engine breathing and brake cooling.Properly quick and powerful Drifts like an M-car should Power-folding second row.
Stiff, jittery ride quality No off-road modes Jaguar does this better. We're still a little upset that BMW doesn't build an M3 wagon. The new X3M is as close as we're likely to get; it's sort of like an M3 wagon, just a couple feet off the ground.
Plus, in the midst of our SUV-crazed market, the X3M is likely to outsell the M3 sedan by some margin, so it'd better be good. The M division's take on the standard X3 involves a new S58 hp twin-turbo inline-six also bound for the next M3 and a performance-oriented version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
The SUV of the Year is The driving experience is the biggest draw of this Bavarian battlewagon. Testing director Kim Reynolds called it "amazingly fast," and features editors Christian Seabaugh and Scott Evans both praised the X3M's willingness and capability for power oversteer and tail-out antics.
Editor-in-chief Ed Loh says it "drifts like a Formula D racer. Detroit editor Alisa Priddle loved the popping, snorting exhaust note played by the forced-induction inline-six. The only car that could compete with the X3M's raucous soundtrack is its coupelike twin, the X4M. Evans noted the same. The X3M rates strongly in performance of intended function, with multiple editors already pegging the X3M as a compelling favorite for next year's super-SUV comparisonthe winner of which gets to compete in Best Driver's Car.
And the X3M is not only fast, but the word "fun" also showed up numerous times across our judges' notes. It didn't fare quite as well between the fun sections of road.
The X3M's suspension "really hates sharp jolts," executive editor Mark Rechtin said, and Evans said it has "a lot more vertical motion than I expected; it definitely went for the kidneys on the roughest sections. Despite its affinity for dancing through back roads, the X3M had no trouble when we took it away from pavement. It has no dedicated off-road drive modes, but it managed our frame-twisting articulation test just fine and never threatened to get bogged down or stuck in the sand.
That being said, choosing the right drive mode isn't as straightforward as it should be. Inside, Rechtin lauded the comfortable and supportive front seats.
Priddle pointed out the high-quality stitching and swaths of red and black leather broken up by splashes of wood and carbon fiber, but she criticized the integration of the dash-mounted infotainment screen. Priddle also mentioned "ample cargo space and thoughtful hooks in the back to keep bags from rolling around.
Priddle also noted the power-folding second-row seats, which unfortunately don't fold entirely flat. So the X3M is not without its flaws, but if this is where BMW's M division is headed, we have a lot to look forward to. It's the best M3 wagon we've ever driven. Watch Originals. Join MotorTrend. As a precursor to the X3, in BMW presented the xActivity concept vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show featuring the 3 Series platform and a fixed-profile convertible body style with reinforced longitudinal rails connect the A-pillars to the rear of the car on both sides, eliminating B- or C-pillars. The X3 premiered in September at the Frankfurt Auto Show Internationale Automobil-Ausstellungsharing its rear suspension with the E46 xi and using an automatic four-wheel drive system marketed as xDrive.
All X3 models feature BMW's all wheel drive systemwith a default torque split between the front and rear axles and the ability to direct all torque to either axle. The system used an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch to enable infinitely adjustable, fully variable distribution of torque from front to rear with the capability of up to percent of engine torque going to either axle.
The X3 was conceived to combine the agility of a compact model with the driving experience of the company's X5. The X3 featured an upright, high H-point seating configuration, marketed as "command seating". Styling exhibited interacting concave and convex surfacing, characteristic for the company at the time along with a reinterpreted Hofmeister kink. BMW upgraded the model in and facelifted the model inwith revised body bumpers, engine, interior trim, and suspension.

The X3 was initially criticised for its harsh ride, austere interior, lack of off-road capability and high price. Optional equipment included a ten-speaker premium audio system with Digital Sound Processing DSPSirius Satellite Radio, a dashboard-mounted color GPS navigational system that replaced the upper dashboard storage compartment and contained a modified version of BMW's "iDrive" multimedia system, eighteen-inch and later nineteen-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, Nevada leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a security system, BMW Assist, a panoramic dual-pane moonroof, Xenon front headlamps with adaptive front headlamps, and sport front bucket seats.
